Ear infections really suck with little kids. Trust us, we know. They can't tell you what is going on for certain (if they are old enough, they might say their ear hurts) and then they don't want to take the yucky medicine after you've scheduled your doctor's appointment and waited to see him to get the antibiotics.
Well, we despise both the ridiculous need to wait for a doctor's diagnosis (when you know what is wrong) and the remedy that destroys all the good bacteria in your body just to get rid of the bad. So, naturally we wanted some wholesome options. I'm writing here what we've actually tried here at home.
Nikki gets the credit for passing this one onto us. Take an onion and cut it in half. Place in the microwave for around a minute (watch for when it has softened and the juices are coming out). Once it is juicy and soft, place in a paper towel or rag and hold under the infected ear. The onion vapor will go in the ear and kill off the infection. It really only takes one shot if the ear is held over it for 15-20 minutes, but a second dose later on doesn't hurt either.
We did this one to Sadie when she had been complaining of the pain in her ear. It was super difficult to keep her head over the onion (she was upset about the heat at first), but it killed it off and she was happier afterwards.
What I like about both of these methods is they involve no antibiotics. The first is easily accessible if you have a ripe garden or a grocery store. The second is super cheap (less than a dollar for both drops of oil together) and works quickly and easily for ornery children - no nasty tasting medicine or uncomfortable heat.
Our baby, Sophie, came away from the doctor diagnosed with an ear infection a few months ago. We opted not to get the medication prescribed and used the oils instead. Cleared it up almost immediately and she didn't give us a fuss. It is now our preferred method for any ear aches.
