Hand, Foot and Mouth...OH MY!!

So my sister called and told us her boy had come down with hand, foot and mouth disease and was most contagious during the birthday party last Saturday (May 21st). On the 25th, Sophie had a fever and a few red bumps so Steph put some On-Guard and Melaleuca on the baby and we ran a diffuser with On-Guard throughout the night. She only had a fever of 99.3 degrees to begin with and it never got any worse, but in the morning the red bumps had become noticeably worse and were spreading.

(At this point in the post I had a picture ready, but we decided a picture of the baby's lower region shouldn't be blasted all over the web - just Google "hand foot and mouth disease" and click on the images option to see what it is)

Anyway, on the 26th we put Melaleuca, Lavender, and Coconut Oil on her underside, since the sores were mostly there, and then put Cinnamon and Oregano on her feet. We did the underside treatment twice with Cinnamon on the feet and Oregano once before her afternoon nap at 1:15pm. Steph changed her around every hour and kept putting oils on her.

The 27th just had brighter spots and more discomfort as the sores spread over her lower region and her knees and feet. She wanted to be held all day. Poor Steph was home alone with her and the other two.

On Saturday, 28th, I tried a new tactic. We have a bottle of Purify in our case that lists as the third treatment option for boils in Modern Essentials (right after Melaleuca and Lavender) and I generously applied it before her mid-morning nap. The sores started drying up right away on her lower region and the knee sores started calming down. After the next treatment she was eating hungrily again (apparently this illness makes eating a literal pain), and after nursing she was walking and playing like normal despite the bumps on her heels.

It has been continual progression from thereon. Whenever we apply the Purify, the bumps stop spreading. She even walks on the bumpy feet. Things are looking up for her.

Note that the sores stopped spreading after the 28th (first shot of Purify) and just scabbed from then on. You can use the three sores from the 26th as a reference through the four pictures.

  1. the pictures were so helpful! Both my 11 month daughter and my 17 month nephew have exactly as your photos indicate. My sister took my nephew to the dr and there was confusion as to whether it was HFMD or scabies. We both thought HFMD but your photos def convinced me. My daughter is 5 days behind my nephew so her bumps are few compared to what they could be. Just applied purify with fractionated coconut and hopefully tomorrow I will not see more and more red bumps. (fingers crossed) Again, thanks for the photos AND the suggestion. My daughter is otherwise happy besides a fever of 103 last night. Maybe purify will minimize the sores.

  2. Glad our frightening pictures were helpful. Just keep using that Purify often. It did wonders when used consistently (as the next post says, twice daily as a minimum). Good luck!

    1. On the top of the page on the right is a "Order Products, Join doTERRA" button. Click on it and it will take you to our store. From there click "Shop" (top right again) and then "Begin Shopping". It is under "Oil Blends".

  4. How did you apply it? I am new to essential oils. Did you use a carrier oil or just straight Purify oil?

  6. my 2 year old daughter was a victim of hfmd and the purify worked the best for us. my sister made the diaper rash cream with lavender ,roman chamomile ,fractionated coconut oil and bees wax for her bottom that I alternated with the purify.

    1. Yes, but I recommend diluting it at least 1:1. We ended up going through it so fast. Our newest daughter got it this past fall and we ended up doing a 1:2 or 1:3 dilution that was JUST as effective. :-)

  8. Where did you apply it? My 13 month old has sores around the outside of her mouth, I don't know about applying purify directly to them as its not ingestible.

  9. All doTERRA oils are safe to consume, some are just formulated to be used topically. You can definitely apply it straight on the sores around the mouth. If you feel concerned about it just use Melaleuca on those particular sores. Either way I recommend a 1:1 dilution with fractionated coconut oil to save and also just in case it feels to strong on such a little one. My kids didn't seem to care, but you never know. :-) Good luck!
